Diwali - Tips to celebrate a healthier, cleaner and safer festival this year

Diwali, the Hindu festival which is also known as the festival of lights, is round the corner and everyone is in high spirits to celebrate it. The preparations for Diwali start from cleaning the house and decorating it beautifully. Welcoming guests and exchanging sweets and dry fruits have been an age old ritual. According to the Hindu mythology, Diwali is celebrated to cherish the victory of good over evil.


Here are a few tips you could adapt this Diwali and make it healthier, cleaner and safer.
1. Clean your home carefully
The first thing that's done when Diwali is nearing is cleaning the house properly. We gather the courage and energy to clean and wipe every nook and corner of the house which remains untouched, covered with dirt, dust and cobwebs through the year. Make the most of this, clean your house properly using disinfectants in order to kill all the germs and microbes and keep any sort of infection and sickness at bay. Don't forget to have yourself a hot shower once done with this task.
2.Try avoiding crackers
This might be difficult for most of us to follow, but there are health and environmental reasons behind reducing or avoiding blasting crackers. The smoke generated by the firecrackers is harmful to all age groups ranging from kids to old people, especially those suffering from breathing problems. It generates noise pollution and pollutes the environment with smoke and cracker debris.
3. Keep the first aid box handy!
There are chances of anybody getting burnt or hurt accidentally while bursting crackers. People suffering from asthma and other breathing ailments, too, remain prone to the danger of suffering from an attack anytime, hence their inhalers and important medicines should be kept nearby in order to prevent any emergency. Also, equip the first aid box with burn creams, eye drops, bandages. Keep an ice pack in the refrigerator too in case somebody gets severe burns.
4. Be high on spirits, not alcohol
Drinks are a must on celebrations for those who have them but make sure you don't over drink. Consume alcohols in moderation in order to prevent any accidents or mishaps from happening. Also, don't drive after drinking, as it would risk your life along with others around you. Stay away from places where crackers are being blasted if you are highly intoxicated, as your reaction rate to run away from lit crackers would be slower than usual and you will be more accident prone.
5. Switch to sugar-free sweets, avoid raisins if you are diabetic
Try eating very less sugary sweets or switch to sugar-free or sugarless sweets to keep your blood sugar under control. Do not eat the silver foil you find on the sweets, as it can be adulterated and made of aluminium instead, which is injurious to your health. This tip is especially for all the diabetics, you can even have more of dry fruits instead of sweets. Make sure you don't consume too many raisins if you suffer from diabetes as they raise sugar levels drastically!

Challenges are what make life interesting. Overcoming them is what makes them Meaningful.
We are sure a lot of you experience anger, frustration at your inability to hit your goals, to make life work as you want it to go. But dear friends, life is a journey that comes packed with lessons that it wants you to learn, just so that you get better as a person. Life is much much deeper that we give credit to it for. Do not take life's challenges as a threat, or bad luck, rather go embrace it because only then will you be able to understand the reason that challenge has come your way.

Having understood that we alone have to face life and build it, we must take full advantage of it. We must become accountable for this precious life given to us and own responsibility for making it a success or a failure. We cannot complain about life's situations and blame others for what we make of it.

Also we cannot live in false hopes that success will come our way without efforts. the only thing that happens without effort is growing old.
Life’s Challenges are not supposed to paralyze you, they are supposed to help you discover who you really are.

A young an was asked, 'What have you done to become a twenty five year old person?' He replied, " I did not die despite my driving!'

'That was God's doing, not yours!' That we live and grow is nature's efforts. 'How ' we live and progress is our effort. We must put forth efforts to grow gracefully and successfully.

There are 4 types of people- 'Those who 'make it happen', 'Those who talk of making it happen'' those who talk of what happened', and those who wonder' what happened!'

We have to take charge of our life and 'make it happen'

Now how do go about making it happen. We are sure most of you have tried several times, but somehow have lost the plot as to how to go about doing it!!

Well to start with, it is very important to have goals in your life. Goals are like a GPRS in a car, that give direction and speed to our movement.

Goals should be divided into 3 categories i.e.
  • Short Term( ranging from a week to a month)
  • Mid Term( Ranging from a month to 3 months)
  • Long Term( Ranging from 3 months to a year or more depending on how clear your vision is)

Set Daily, Monthly, and Long Term goals and Dreams. Don’t ever be afraid to dream too big. Nothing is Impossible. If you believe in yourself, sure you can achieve it.
Now how best to go about achieving your goals?

Some steps that will help you in this exercise:

1) Get a spiral notebook this very day and write down ten to fifteen goals that you would like to achieve in the foreseeable future.

2) Each night before you go to sleep, visualize and imagine your life as it will be when you have achieved your goals. Well make visualisation a regular part of your life. Invest the time regularly to create exciting mental pictures of yourself and your life exactly as you ant them to be. Then, have complete faith that your pictures will materialize exactly when you are ready.

3) Think of 3 things that you could do to achieve each of your goals. Always think in terms of specific actions you could take.
“Set your goals high, and don’t stop till you get there.”

4) Discipline yourself to rewrite your goals every day, without reviewing your previous list, until you become absolutely convinces that achieving your goals is inevitable.

5) Be completely honest and realistic about your life and your goals. Be willing to accept, in every area of your life where you experience stress and resistance, that you could be wrong or that you have made a mistake. Resolve today to cut your losses and leakages that prevent you from achieving your goals whenever possible.


Also look into each problem or obstacle you face and seek the valuable lesson or benefit it contains. Each life's problem comes with a lesson that it wants us to learn, so never get lost in the life's problem itself, rather let you logical mind come to play, and find a reason and solution out of the problem. Remember friends, we ourselves are the solution to most of our problem. There is no problem in life that cannot be resolved, provided we allow ourselves to take charge.

8. Satsang (Spiritual discussions or Association of truth) with God devotees.

9. Non-stealing, non-covetousness, non-attachment, non-injury, non-violence in thought, word and deed, etc.

Pongal is one of the most important harvest festival especially for Indian People and its also represented as Tamil Harvest Festival.


“As from Olden days people planting and harvesting the food and crops, those things are usually said to be Harvesting Festival”





Harvesting festival basically celebrated on January 14th or 15th , so these festival also called as Thai Pongal because its celebrate on Tamil Month “Thai” First Day in Tamil Calendar. The reason for celebrating Pongal is treated as a traditional Occasion to thank god for giving beautiful nature that give us grains, crops etc.


'Thai Pirandhaal Vazhi Pirakkum'


This is the Motive Quote followed by Tamil Peoples and they believe that family and other problems sure going to be solve with the arrival of Tamil Month “Thai” that starting on Pongal Festival.
These Pongal Festival always celebrated in the habit of four days, First days is “Bhogi” and the second one is “Thai-Pongal” and the third one is “Mattu-Pongal” and finally last day is mentioned as “Kannum Pongal”.

First day Bhogi is specially to respect lord “Indra”, the ultimate rule of Cloud that give us rain for abundance of harvest, thereby bringing plenty and prosperity to the land and move over unwanted or waste things from the house put into the fire to make the surrounding as new one.


On Second day Pongal Festival puja is made as boil the rice with milk in an outdoor earthenware pot and its symbolically offered to the God “Sun” and with other obligations. People wearing traditional dress. Major Point is a turmeric plant is tied over the rice boiled Pot and two sticks of Sugarcane in the background, Bananas and Coconut in the dishes too. Important thing a common point in these festival is Kolam, the favourable design which is traditionally traced in white lime powder before the house in the early morning after bathing. Without kolam the Pongal day is incomplete.


Third day is particularly for Cow and its mentioned as “Mattu Pongal”. Making some arrangements like different colored beads, sheaves of corns, tinkling bells and flower garlands are tied around the neck of the cattle and then are respected. They are fed with Pongal and taken to the village centers. The resounding of their bells attract the villagers as the young men race each other's cattle. The entire atmosphere becomes festive and full of fun and revelry. Arati is performed on them, so as to ward off the evil eye and taking place of “Jallikattu”


Fourth Day is called as Kannum pongal. Kannum it means “to see” , like get to gather. People meets relations, friends and neighbor to feast together. During this day turmeric leaf is washed and put on the entire ground to make us traditional. And its also mentioned as end of the Pongal festival for the year.



On the other side of all these days celebrations, Pongal is spiritual significance too. Because time period between the Middle month of December and January is consider the days of in-auspiciousness and the dawn (sunrise) of pongal is considered prosperous and wealthy. Therefore it indicates the dark days are disappear and the dawn of enlightenment.
